What are three words you would use to describe LSM?
growth-oriented, supportive, exciting
Why did you choose LSM?
I chose LSM for a community that I know will help me grow personally and professionally. I was drawn to the collaborative energy that was evident from the first time I stepped into the LSM lounge on Quaker Day. I also knew I wanted to approach the pre-medical path from a unique perspective, which LSM provides in countless ways. Before LSM, I never took a business class before, but the LSM community helped me navigate my first semester business easily. Now, I can’t imagine my days without my business classes.
What do you find most rewarding or enjoyable about the LSM program?
The most enjoyable aspect of the LSM program is when everyone is able to come together for semester retreats. After just one semester here, I am sure older years are busy with a handful of things, but still make sure to come to our retreat to pass on their wisdom and collaborate with their peers. I have really grown to appreciate how engaged each year is and how every member prioritizes the LSM community regardless of their workload.
Are you doing research currently? If so, where and on what, and what do you like about it?
I currently conduct research in the Powell Lab, assisting Dr. Sarah Gitto in the development of her own immunology lab and evaluating PARP inhibitors to improve the accuracy of ovarian cancer treatment. This work is solidifying my interest in oncology and translational research, as I learn more about the potential to apply basic science findings to clinical practice.
What is the favorite thing you’ve done at Penn so far?
Joining LSAB! Also, this past semester I have joined greek life at Penn, which has been very exciting and I am looking forward to the rest of my second semester. Prior to that, I believe my favorite experiences at Penn so far are attending the Fireside Chats organized by LSM that spans discussions with CEOs, Chairmen, and physicians from all walks of life. It is another great opportunity for me to sit down with my peers and learn outside of the classroom in the evenings.
What main extracurricular activities do you do at Penn?
I am in the Penn Undergraduate Biotech Society, specifically the Investments Committee. We research current biotech companies on the rise, and learn the ropes of assessing investments from a financial and biological perspective. I am also a part of Black Wharton Undergraduate Association, which has given me an uplifting, inspiring community in the business realm. Furthermore, I am a member of Penn's Foundation of the International Medical Relief of Children and volunteer in the Marketing Committee. One of our projects is focused on providing malaria medication and one month’s worth of rapid diagnostic tests to Bududa, Uganda. Outside of school, I spend my free time with Penn’s Club Lacrosse team at Penn, which has introduced me to amazing student athletes!
Do you have plans for after graduation (tentative or otherwise)?
After graduation, I plan to attend medical school. I aspire to be a physician-scientist who can use my business and medical education to improve the standards for minority patients, as well as push to make research more inclusive.
